I often initially approach a new piece with the intention of processing a specific event or mental shift, beginning with base colors that feel reflective to my state. I’ve described what happens next as the art taking over, where the layering really begins, whether that be through collage or creating shapes and textures either inspired by or directly taken from found objects ranging from the mundane to the bizarre. I find constant inspiration in the garish and the theatrical, people and artistic movements that exist in a space of joyous unapology away from the mainstream or that gleefully bastardize traditional mainstream ideas or motifs: graffiti & street art, editorial fashion and unconventional dressing, punk and DIY aesthetics, Bertolt Brecht and the theatre of the absurd, even the early drag aesthetics of the 1970s and 1980s. If we are going through hell, and maybe we are, my work shows that we might as well make hell a delightful place for ourselves.
